President Aleksandra Babic Annual Round Up

Dear friends and colleagues,

We are coming to the end of another busy year for everyone and I wish to thank you all for your hard work and efforts.

Our annual meeting this year in Milan was a real success with over 500 nurse participants, and excellent speakers, contributing to what was an exciting meeting.

During the meeting, the VOD project was also launched as demonstration of our commitment to educational initiatives for healthcare professionals. This was presented again during the International Study Day held in Florence this year, and I am happy to say that the sessions during the Study Day were filmed and will be available on the EBMT website, which is being updated and developed by the CNC group. Please find the direct link here: http://videocast.dsit.it/customs/ebmt/index.php

We have also strengthened the collaboration between EBMT NG and pertinent Patient Associations in the realization of the “Lulla‘s Journey“ – the DVD for Children focusing on SCT and cord blood donation. This has raised awareness worldwide and is available on our EBMT home page.

Following the annual meeting, we performed the EBMT Membership survey, which helped to inform our strategy for the coming years. As you will remember, the results were presented during the London Board and Committee Meeting in September to all committee members and your input was vital in developing a final and comprehensive strategy, which was presented to the EBMT Main Board in October this year. One of the strategic points was development of the Outreach project, which will be developed further in 2015, aiming to provide educational support and expertise in low and middle income countries.

The EBMT NG collaborative projects are growing not only ‘in-house’ with the S-FAST research protocol led by our own Research Sub Committee in association with the Complications and Quality of Life Working Party, but also on a wider European scale. The working alliance between EBMT NG, MASCC and ISOO in the development of a Position Paper relating to basic oral-care for hematology-oncology patients and HSCT recipients, will be presented at a joint session at the MASCC annual meeting and also that of the EBMT meeting in 2015. Further links have been also been forged with Saudi Society for BMT this year, where EBMT NG representatives were invited speakers.

Unfortunately this year, Eva Johannson, our valued and admired colleague passed away. This has left a somewhat sad end to the year. Eva’s presence, knowledge, and encouragement contributed greatly to our work and I am sure we will continue with the enthusiasm that she gave us all.

I wish you all a peaceful and enjoyable festive season and look forward to an exciting 2015

Aleksandra
